Recently I was looking for a solid, reliable home defense weapon, and as we all know there is nothing better than a shotgun! Many times the shotgun doesn’t even have to be fired. It’s very appearance strikes fear into the heart of those staring into the barrel. I opted to purchase the Remington Model 870 Express Synthetic 7-Round.

Since I am a bumpkin from Ohio’s rural countryside, there were only 2 choices for me, the Remington 870 or a Mossberg pump action.
I opted to go with a Remington Model 870 Express Synthetic 7-Round after much consideration, deep thought, and a series of conversations with other hunters and my father, who is a retired Sheriff.
I chose the Model 870 Express Synthetic 7-Round. This is a fantastic firearm. At first I was leery of the synthetic parts in lieu of the standard wood, but once I felt them I realized that they were nearly indestructible and water resistant. To top it off the metal parts are a low-glare power coated finish that so far has proven very durable (I keep my guns well oiled and clean).
This shotgun feels pretty light coming in around 7.5lbs, which means that it kicks like a mule. If you’ve shot a 12 gauge this will be no surprise to you.
Remington Model 870 Express Synthetic 7-Round Specs:
- Weight: 7.5 lbs (average)
- Barrel Length: 18.5 inches
- Overall Length: 38.5 inches
- Barrel type: Fixed Cylinder Choke
- Capacity: 6+1
It’s pump action is smooth and reliable and I’ve not had any issues with putting shells through it. It’s shower of 00buck or #4 buckshot always end up right where I am pointing it, and this un-rifled barrel can even handle shotgun slugs (good luck hitting anything more than 50 yards away, this isn’t a hunting rifle, silly. If you want to hunt with it, get a field barrel, then ensure that you aren’t breaking local/state laws by hunting with a 6 round shotgun).
Every time I pick up the Remington Model 870 Express I can feel the quality of it’s craftsmanship and there are no end to the Remington 870 accessories! If this 870 is ever needed to defend my home, I know, without a doubt, that this gun will perform with the desired results.
As always, Remington has produced another fine heirloom class firearm, that will see a lifetime of use from me, then get passed down to my children and grandchildren. If you are in the market for a home defense or hunting shotgun, then you’ll never choose wrong if you pick up a Remington 870!
If you need something more versatile, than a standard shotgun, you can mod your 870 with a very simple bullpup stock upgrade. This ain’t your daddy’s 870!
There are tons of customizations, addons and other great Remington 870 Accessories, to tailor this shotgun to whatever role(s) you need it to perform!
Please keep your firearms in a secure location and locked away from children’s tiny hands and burglars.
I really wanted to do a review of the Maverick Model 88 Security, but my emails to Maverick Arms have gone unanswered. I can’t blame them, I’m sure they get tons of strange emails begging for free stuff, but I was going to review their firearm. When I checked it out at the Gun Shop, it seemed to be comparable to the Remington 870, and about 1/2 the price. In the $250 price range, I was very interested in trying it out.
Seriously, Maverick Arms, call me, I want to demo your 88 and post about it, to generate some buzz for ya!
